Over the years, student parking rules are adjusted at Conestoga Valley High School. While school administrators have their reasons for the changes, student drivers often have opinions about these guidelines.
For example, this school year students may only park in front of the tennis courts rather than in front of the Rill Gymnasium doors. Kylie Buckwalter (12) stated, “these rules make the parking lot more crammed at the end of the day, which can give some safety concerns.”
In an email from High School Assistant Principals Ashley Johnston and Dawn Eby, they stated, “Having students parked together allows for more oversight and accountability. It allows our staff to provide assistance to a limited area.”
Another divisive issue over the years has been the price of student parking passes. According to the 2016 parking rules brochure, parking passes were $75 dollars that year. Students did not like that the passes were so expensive, so administration took that into consideration and changed the price the following year.
Eby and Johnson said, “We looked at other schools’ parking permit prices within our county, and we also realized it’s easier to divide $40 into the four marking periods. This allows students to only pay a portion of the full price based on how many marking periods they need the permit for.”
While the lower permit price is welcome, students are still frustrated about the more restricted parking lots this year. CV senior Genesis Guardado said, “I think it’s unfair,” when asked about parking lot rule changes.
“I had to walk in the pouring rain from the student parking lot to the front entrance doors. This completely ruined my mood as I walked into class soaking,” said senior Thien Nguyen.
Eby and Johnson commented, “This decision was made in conjunction with the Conestoga Valley District Office to ensure ample parking for both visitors and staff of CVHS.”
