Sawyer Murnane, a junior goal keeper for the girls soccer team, reached 400 saves on September 20th. During the final minutes in the game, she denied a late score attempt by Warwick. Her teammates on the sidelines cheered for her as she reached the milestone.
“It was exciting, especially knowing how much work that went into getting there,” Murnane said.
She feels being the goalkeeper is special: “It makes me feel that I have an important role on the field, and knowing my team can trust me.”
“I have high confidence with her at the goal,” said Lexi Zoll (12), who plays forward for the team. “She is brave. She’s not scared to go after the ball.”
Other teams also recognize her skills. Midfield player Madison Wolfe (11) explained, “One time I was playing, and one girl on the other team kept calling her a cat because she has cat-like reflexes.”
Being goalkeeper is a high-pressure position. The goalie can make or break the game. “I try to focus on what I can control. [Resetting from a play has] always been the most challenging part, but I just remind myself I’m the last defender,” Murnane explained. Building off the momentum, Murnane said, “I want to reach 500 saves, and improve my footwork.”
